Cholesterol is a functional component of every cell in the human body. It plays role in the digestion of fats, synthesizing various hormones, and Vitamin D. The human body can produce this waxy fat-like substance that needs. Therefore, no dietary intake is required.
Cholesterol is also circulated in the blood by lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is referred to as bad. They are associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. LDL carries the liver’s cholesterol to the body tissues and arteries and may cause a harmful buildup of cholesterol inside the artery walls. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is referred to as good one. They are associated with a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. HDL carries the cholesterol from tissues to the liver. (FDA, 2021)
In the U.S., the daily value is defined as 300mg. But this is not the recommended amount to consume in a day. The daily values reference the amounts of nutrients to consume or not to exceed each day. The recommendation for cholesterol is to keep intake as low as possible. (FDA, 2021)
